As you might expect, the lure of so much money appeared to be too much of a temptation for the Peddler. With each increase in the amount offered, he seemed to get perceptibly weaker. Finally, as the lord said “This is my final offer,” and the Peddler agreed to relinquish ownership of the dog.
The lord literally jumped for joy, he was so excited about his new purchase. Meanwhile, the Peddler knelt next to his dog and explained that he had sold him to the lord. The dog barked and growled and the Peddler shook his head in agreement.
“What did the dog say,” demanded the lord. The Peddler looked up and replied, “The dog said that he understood and would not stand in the way of my wealth. And that you appear to be a decent sort of fellow.”
“The lord remarked, “I really must learn how to do this ‘dog talk’.” Then under his breath he said, “Decent sort indeed,” and frowned at the dog. “I am now the owner of the smartest dog in the world,” said the lord with obvious pride. “What will you do with the dog,” asked one of the coachmen. The lord thought for a while and then said, “I know, I will make him a guard dog.”
The Peddler, who was putting away his wares after he had stowed the money from the sale of his dog, heard that remark. He turned to the lord and said, “I don’t think he will make a good guard dog.”
