“Nonsense,” snorted the Lord. “The smartest dog in the world will naturally be the best guard dog in the world.” “Suit yourself,” said the Peddler, “he’s your dog now.”
The Lord smiled and said, “Why yes, he is my dog and the best guard dog he shall be!” Months passed and the Peddler no longer had to travel from village to village. He now had his own business in town and was doing very well. He decided to go on a holiday and to use it as an opportunity to visit the lord, whose money made his good life possible. He also wanted to see his dog, who had really made this new life possible.
The very day I arrived and was sitting on the roof of the lord’s manor house was the day that the Peddler arrived to visit the dog. When he arrived at the lord’s home, he noticed a lot of commotion in front of the house. He noticed several policemen taking to a very upset lord. He then noticed his former dog
tied to a small tree by the side gate. The lord looked very angry and was repeatedly pointing to the dog. The Peddler could not make out what was being said but something very serious must have happened.
As the Peddler approached the group of people who were at the house, he heard someone shout his name and suddenly, everyone was looking at him. Several of the lord’s servants rushed up and grabbed him. “What is going on,” he protested.
