But no sooner had the words left his mouth than a young policeman, who had just joined the group, stepped forward and held out an object wrapped in a handkerchief.
The Chief Inspector unwrapped it and there was a muddy, nickel plated .38 caliber revolver. “We found it on the edge of the road where it appears that someone slipped while crawling out of the ditch. There are fresh wheel tracks, that may have been how the thief escaped,” the young policeman told the Inspector.
All eyes slowly turned to dog. But that still is not a very good explanation of why he did not protect my jewels,” shouted the Lord. The dog suddenly began barking and growling again.
“What did he just say?” the Chief Inspector blurted, before he could catch himself. The Peddler smiled and said, “He was explaining about the jewelry.” “Well, what did he say?” demanded an obviously impatient Chief Inspector.
The Peddler turned to the Chief Inspector and explained that the dog had seen most of the jewelry the thief was stealing, being worn by the madam of the home on various occasions. The
dog said that based on his experiences with the Peddler’s selling of jewels and precious metals, that all of the jewelry the thief was taking was of inferior quality and some of the pieces were glass imitations.
