But as in most of the concepts being presented in The Adventures of Cosmos Crow, you must not only overcome your own “Stinky Thinking” but that of others. The story, The Too Smart Dog story illustrates that having and using “Good Thinking” can be fraught with difficulties.
In the beginning of the story, a Peddler is visiting the home of a rich lord in England. Cosmos Crow just happens to be vacationing in England and is resting on the lord’s house. In the course of conversations, the Peddler tells the lord that his dog is the smartest dog in the world. The lord is very suspicious and asks the Peddler
to demonstrate this dog’s intelligence. By a series of tasks, the lord is impressed that it is either a very smart dog or the Peddler is a terrific con man.
The lord is intrigued when he learns that the Peddler can understand his dog’s speech. Through a series of barks and growls, the dog is able to convey to the Peddler a truth that only the dog could know but that could be confirmed. This exhibition was so impressive that the lord was convinced that this was indeed the world’s smartest dog. The lord insists that he must have this dog and offers ever- larger sums of money until the Peddler finally gives in and sells his dog to the lord. The lord then pronounces that he will make this dog the worlds greatest guard dog. The Peddler cautions that this might not be a good idea but the lord dismisses his concern.
Times passes and the Peddler decides to visit his former dog companion at the lord’s home. When he arrives, he notices that there is a great deal of commotion going on. Suddenly, he is seized and accused of robbing the lord.
