P. 34

It seems that on the previous night when all were out of the lord’s house, except for Too Smart Dog, someone broke into the house and robbed the safe of the lord’s jewelry. The lord insisted that the Peddler must have had something to do with the theft because the “guard dog” did nothing to prevent the robbery.
After some discussion, the lord and Peddler convince the Chief inspector that this dog could tell them what happened the previous night. In the conversation that ensued, the dog explained everything that had transpired and convinced all of the policemen that either the dog can really talk or that the dog’s interpreter, the Peddler, was involved in the theft.
The assumption about the Peddler’s role in the robber changed when the dog told them that the safe contained only fake jewels and the truly valuable jewels were in a locked box underneath the lord’s bed. Once the lord confirmed this, all realized that if the dog or Peddler could know about the location of the real jewels and did not take them, then they were innocent of the robbery.
But there was still an area of confusion. If the Peddler was not the thief, why didn’t the “guard dog,” attack the intruder. The Peddler put this question to the dog and interpreted his reply. “Well, it seemed like a very dangerous situation and there was a good chance he (the dog) could be seriously injured if he attacked the thief. No one was home so there was no danger of harm coming to anyone else. Most of the jewelry was fake and insured for more than it is worth so the lord will make a tidy profit off the insurance.”
