I’ve noticed during my extensive travels that many of us like things simple and consistent. We want to get up at the same time every day and have our same cereal for breakfast. We want to wear the same shoes with a particular pair of pants or dress. Most of the time our desire for simplicity and order causes little harm and is often useful.
Unfortunately, life is not simple, consistent or orderly. Someone who is nice to us one day may for no apparent reason be ugly to us the next day. You may find someone fun to be with but then you are told that you can’t play with them for some reason or another. It may be because they are of a different race or religion. Maybe it is because your parent or older brother does not like their parent or older brother.
One day math is easy and the next day you fail the math test. One day everyone laughs at your jokes and the next day, they make fun of you for being too silly. One day a cute kid smiles at you and the next day they act like you don’t exist.
All of these examples show how confusing life can be from one day to the next. It can cause you to make yourself anxious, afraid or scared. Since no one likes these types of feelings, we try to make things simple.
For example, if you try a green vegetable like spinach and don’t like the taste, you may decide that you don’t like any green leafy vegetable.
