Worksheet
In this first page of the worksheets, Cosmos points out that many of us have a “Black and White Kingdom”... between our ears. Some of us see things as all one way or all another and we are not willing to take the time to evaluate individual differences. It makes life easier; “All green vegetables are nasty” is our belief even if it is incorrect and ultimately limiting. Although a refusal to eat any green vegetables will hardly ruin your life, “All teachers (police, bosses are mean and should be ignored” can cause you serious life difficulties.
The important part of the first question has to do with an insistence that something has to be a certain way, “without any proof or a willingness to consider that you might be incorrect.” Some green vegetables are nasty and some teachers, police, bosses are mean and that is the reality of life. You want your children to understand the necessity of evaluating and deciding on an individual basis the merits in a particular situation. It is this ability to have “flexibility” in our perceptions that allow us to make good decisions. To be
able to choose from a variety of responses based on those accurate perceptions enables us to be successful in life.
The second question illustrates how we become angry when others question our ridged Stinky Thinking. You want your children to realize that it is okay for others to question our beliefs and becoming angry in the situation as described in question two
is Not OK.
