But the Peddler persisted and sent the King a note which read:
“If you will listen to my story short, I will give you the gift of smart.
If you like it, it is yours for a fee, If you don’t, then banish me.”
The King was intrigued and could not see how he could resist such a request. “How can I lose?” said the King. He repeated the words of the rhyme: “Gift of smart.” “If you don’t, then banish me.” “Send the Peddler to my chamber,” commanded the King.
This seemed like a very interesting situation, so I decided to fly over to the castle to see what would happen. The Peddler arrived and bowed very low to the King. “Come on, come on,” shouted the King, “I’m very busy. What is it you have to
show me?”
“Your Majesty, please, just a moment of your time,” said the Peddler. “I have something to offer that will make you the wisest person in the kingdom. If you like it, I have one request.” “What is it!” the King demanded. “If my humble gift can in fact, make you the wisest person in the kingdom, will you be willing to grant this humble peddler one wish?” “Of course, of course,” said the King. “I have little belief in your ability to make me so wise but if you can, then I will be glad to honor your request.” “Thank you, Your Majesty,” said the Peddler and he once again bowed very deeply.
