TOPIC: Humans are by our very nature “right now” creatures. We want what we want when we want it. This type of thinking had value in a primi ve world when dangers abounded and life was short. Those who got what they wanted when they wanted it were more likely to survive.
Unfortunately, this type of behavior precludes learning many skills that are considered impera ve in our modern world. Children
s ll manifest this type of thinking and must be taught to delay gra ca on and learn di cult skills, which seem to be irrelevant to their immediate needs.
This story is designed to illustrate that the only thing that separates us from the rest of the animal kingdom is our willingness to put o the immediate pleasures so that you can learn the skills necessary to succeed in the future.
In the story, the animals of the world are invited to Atlan s for a great conference. The creatures of Atlan s explain that they have given certain “gi s” to the humans. These “gi s” are the same skills that allowed the creatures of Atlan s to be very successful.
The leader of Atlan s explains that they now realize that with these gi s, the human animals are becoming very successful and they fear that the humans may take over the world. Therefore, they called this conference to o er these same “gi s” to all of the other animals.
