correctly, exercising, having an impact on your community and engaging life passions, especially those you
believe should be put off until retirement. It is important to train to be where you are. Business
philosopher Jim Rohn couldn’t have been more insightful when he said, “wherever you are, be there. Don’t
think about vacation when you are at work, so you don’t have to think about work when you’re on
          vacation.”

Balance within your Practice. You are a Doctor of Dental Medicine, but you are running a business. There
is often a gap in executing both of these areas of operations simultaneously and separating them is not an
option. The answer to this dilemma is not going to be easy. In their book Execution: The Discipline of
Getting Things Done, L. Bossidy & Ram Charan capture the essence of this gap and explain it. “The fact is
that with execution, there is a significant gap between what the company’s leaders want to achieve and
the ability of their people to carry it out.” In other words, whatever area your internal staff or external
providers are not executing, the burden falls on you.
Balance within your Finances. Are you paying too much in taxes? How do you know? Most people have a
qualified CPA; some even “focus” on medical practitioners, but again how do you know if you are
          overpaying?

Are you monetizing your practice? Is it providing for the lifestyle you believe you deserve? Are you
saving for retirement at the appropriate level? Are keeping these dynamics in balance with driving an
          optimal valuation of your practice?

Finally, how is your Life Balance? Is your practice operating around your life, or the other way around?
Achieving a genuine, long lasting balance will take work and a framework that regularly considers fully all
the items mentioned above and more and aligning them with each career stage.

All of this cannot be discussed without recognizing the challenges of the last few years. We can all
empathize with Henry Kissinger who, while serving as Secretary of State in the 1970s, exclaimed, "There
cannot be a crisis next week. My schedule is already full."

As you set out to reach a balance in life and as you pass through each state of your career, outside
guidance and skilled resources can often pay a pivotal role. The right team with the right skills can help
overcome the things that tends to stop us, such as apathy or lack of motivation, lack of time, lack of
          energy.

Even before COVID-19 and its resulting pandemic fatigue, the reality is that most of us live below the level
of our energy. Imagine restoring your deep energies and motivation by rediscovering your path to work-
          life balance.
          Let’s keep the conversation going!
