...the families... are not going to be able to
break the shackles of state housing
dependency. And nobody wants to be freed
more than these families... It is incumbent
on us to come up with some sort of
strategy to fix it.
....almost 75% of Māori are under the age of
35. So if we don’t fix this now, we are in for
a heap of trouble. We’ve probably got a
couple of generations left. And then it is
going to be too late… there will be no
tūrangawaewae... no landing place.
And that’s what I see in the young tamariki
today... brought up in the urban areas,
their wairua is roaming, it can’t land… they
are very very distraught and restless... We
have to try and come up with something.
And I am prepared to spend the rest of my
employed life looking for a solution.
