Kataraina Hone Te Koni; although such marriages between Pakeha and
high ranking Maori women were in most cases encouraged, Kataraina's
relationship with Murray was at least initially opposed by her whanau. At one
                                                                                            Ta Kataraina Hone Te
point when her whanau suspected he was in the house with her they came Koni
around to chase him out. Fortunately she saw them coming and hid him in one
of those big old barrels that they used to store salted meat in. Well they didn't
find him and when she rushed over to let him out after they had left she found him half suffocated and
coughing like hell. This is perhaps mischievously how Murray got his Maori name Mare which is both
a transliteration of Murray and the Maori word for cough, so he became known as Hone Mare.
Kataraina marena Alfred John Boroughdale [203] [MRIN: 65], son of John
Boroughdale [326] and Christian Murray [327], about 1844 in Mangonui. Alfred
was born on 3 Jan 1813 in Dumfriesshire, Moffat, Scotland, died on 13 Dec 1888 in
Tairua at age 75, and was buried in Rangihaukaha Urupa, Pukepoto. Another name for
                      Alfred was Hone Mare (cough).

records in Moffat Dumfriesshire, Scotland show that Joseph and his spouse
Christian Murray Boroughdale had five children baptised there between 1809
and 1819, and a sixth child baptised at the Jame St Scotch Presbyterian Church Alfred John Boroughdale
at Whitehaven in 1822. They were; Mary 1809, Margaret 1810, John 1813,
                          David 1816, Jean 1819 and William 1822.
The Murray family have ascertained that Alfred John Murray was in fact born John Boroughdale, and
subsequently changed his name to Alfred John Murray (his mothers maiden name), as he made and
supplied bullets to the local Te Rarawa Iwi in Pukepoto, which meant he was soon in trouble with the
local authorities, so as a precautionary measure he changed his name.

A NZ Herald Obituary 20 December 1888; Another of Aotearoa's earliest colonists has joined the
great majority. Mr John Murray, of Boat Harbour Tairua who died on December 13, aged 76yrs was
one of the few survivors of the hardy pioneers who fifty years ago contributed their part to the
colonisation of this country. Mr Murray landed in Aotearoa in 1837 remaining some time in the
Hokianga, whence in or about 1840 he went to Kaitaia, where he remained several years. He next
moved to Mercruy Bay where he followed his trade of shipbuilder, turning out some fine fishing boats.
His last move was to Boat Harbour, Tairua where he resided for the last twenty years of his life.
While at Tairua he built two fine cutters, the Halfcaste and the Te Rarawa.
