Rapunga Kupu Akoako: (korero taken from "Boroughdale Murray, the
beginning of a NZ dynasty"et al) Waata Walter Murray; was a bushman
before settling at Te Awakokoru on the western side of Matakana island. Waata
Waata Murray
spent many years serving on the local school committee as well as the tribal and
marae committees. In later years he together with his brother and nephew
bought the shop previously owned by the Matakana Ferries. Unlike his other enterprises, this one was
not a success. Waata felt a strong sense of responsibility towards his ageing mum Mere who lived at
Kutaroa with his young sister Puti. Many a Sunday was spent with Mere and they along with other
visitors would share thier lunches out under the trees.
Waata marena Rosie Te Rau Matangi [367] [MRIN: 124]. Rosie was buried in
Kutaroa Te Ahi Puhi-Puhi Matakana Island.
Rapunga Kupu Akoako: (korero taken from "Matakana Island, te whakaruru
hau o te moana o taura"et al) Rosie Te Rau Matangi; was a caring person
who introduced the family to a wide variety of foods she herself enjoyed. She
had many interests ie fishing, cooking, sewing and in later years the Womens
Health League. The competitions the League held after each meeting aroused a
competitive spirit in Rosie and quite often she would be in the garden talking to
Rosie Matangi
the flowers and the vegetables as though willing them to perfection for the next
competition.

1968 at age 81, and was buried in Kutaroa Te Ahi Puhi-Puhi Matakana Island.
Rapunga Kupu Akoako: (korero taken from "Boroughdale Murray, the
beginning of a NZ dynasty"et al) Witana David Murray; a sportsman of
great prowess and with his brothers became very popular in the gum digging
camps as wrestlers. Thier fame spread far and wide and it has been said that one
Witana Murray
of the brothers represented Aotearoa in this sport. They were also renowned
rugby players. Witana with his brother Waata worked very hard to clear a tract
of land which he then farmed with maize and livestock. As the family grew Witana was forced to seek
further employment in construction and the Katikati dairy factory until his farm became more
profitable (which it did). In time Witana along with his family and members of the Tauiti whanau built
thier meeting house "Tauiti" at Kutaroa. The dining hall "Hineaorangi" was once a salvation army hall.
A very private person, Witana preferred to remain in the background stoking fires and preparing the
kai for the manuhiri. It was his brother Waata who sat on the paepae tapu. Apart from his farm duties
Witana also operated a cream carrying business.
