was born about 1889 and died on 15 Nov 1916 in Herekino aged about 27. The cause of
his death was Accident at work.
Rapunga Kupu Akoako: A Fatal Accident (korero taken from the
North Auckland Age, Friday November 24, 1916), "We regret to have to
report that a fatal accident occurred at Herekino on Wednesday, November
15th, which resulted in the death of a native called David Murray, who comes
                                                                                            Wata Karaehe Murray
from Tauranga and also injury to another native named Edward Raroa, a
cousin of Andrew Ngawaka of Whangape. The latter received very severe
bruises and cuts, in addition to a dislocated shoulder. The accident occurred while the men were both
engaged in closing the dam in Herekino, and it appears that the dam was tripped on the previous night
and the morning of the accident it was in the act of being closed when by some accident the misfortune
occurred. Both men fell down most mountainous falls. Raroa had two very high falls and it is a
marvellous thing that he was not killed outright. The country is most mountainous in this district and it
was only after a six hour hunt that the deceased man, David Murray was found hung up head
downwards in a cleft in the rocks. Immediately upon receiving the news of the accident, Dr Lunn
proceeded to Herekino and did all that was possible for the injured man. An inquest was held but it
was decided to adjourn until the injured man was sufficiently recovered to give evidence".
