As the worlds population continues to rise, along with increasing life-expectancy, the role of the orthopaedic surgeon is key in managing the worlds rising morbidity. In the developed world total hip and total knee replacements are the second and third most common elective procedures. The World Health Organiza- tion (WHO) estimates that 10% of men and 18% of women over the age of 60 have symptomatic osteoarthritis. The WHO also states that 10% of global mortality is due to accident and emergencies, and the morbidities arising therein contribute a major burden on healthcare systems. The vast majority of this trauma occurring the developing world.
Musculoskeletal health and function is vital to ones ability to perform their work and contribute to their family and societies well-being. More importantly physical activity has been shown to decrease the rates of all cause mortality, including coronary heart disease, type 2 diabetes, colon and breast cancer as well is lower the levels of depression.
