The want-ads, craigslist, newspapers and various internet job search sites may not
suffice for the effort you will need to put forward to find a job. Your mind should be
prepared to put in as many hours finding a job as you will actually work per week
when you find a job.
So, finding a job is your job until you get a job. This applies whether you have been to
prison or not because you will need money to do the things that will give you personal
freedom and privacy you deserve.
You are the product and you have to convince businesses or employers to buy your
product. This means that you have to have some marketing sense. You need to know
what skills you have and the quality of your work ethic minus desperation because
desperation will only complicate your intentions. Remember, this is short-term. If you
decide to be loyal to someone else's business, you may find yourself impoverished.
Be sure to have your résumé, a pen, birth certificate, driver’s license or state ID, Social
Security card or work Visa available. In addition, some states require that employers
use E-Verify to determine the eligibility of their employees to work in the U.S. E-verify
allows your SSN to be checked immediately. Again, this is a part of the matrix.
The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services has redesigned the Permanent Resident
Card (form I-551) or what many refer to as the “Green Card” to enhance the security
features. This will not stop border-crossings or deter the individuals that fabricate the
documents for those desperate to live a life of slavery. Actually, an ex-offender may
be wise to apply for a green card and then seek employment to keep from divulging a
criminal past.
Decide what you can do and make a list of the skills and any tools used in the process.
And when you get a job, don’t expect to earn wages that will support a family.
However, your income should supplement that of your significant other. If there is no
significant other, prepare to make the necessary sacrifices to get you to the point you
wish to be.
A job out of prison should allow you to develop a strong work history, work ethic,
new skills and professional references. And as much as you may hate the security,
hotel or food industry, it may be the easiest place to start due to the high turnover
rate.
