Introduction to
Strands of Evidence
elcome to Strands of Evidence, a hair
and fiber analysis lab in the Mystery of
WLyle and Louise. A brutal murder case
is unfolding in a small Appalachian town. Already
the case spans two crime scenes and five people
are dead. In the most recent development in the
case, two suspects have been apprehended in New
Mexico and trace evidence from their persons has
been mailed to Highland Park for analysis.
In this lab, emphasizing microscopy techniques
and proper evidence handling, students will
examine hair and fiber evidence from three
locations: a bloody blanket in the back of a

missing truck, a cabin where a double homicide
occurred, and collections obtained from two
suspects. Following the analysis of the hairs and
fibers, students will determine if one suspect, both
suspects, or neither suspect was present at the
scene of the crime.
Once the lab results have been analyzed, students
may conduct a mock trial to hold a suspect
accountable for their actions.
Teacher’s notes are found at the beginning of the
manual. Copies may be freely made of all materials
for your students.
