A survey distributed to families across Iowa showed nearly 8,000 children in 112 communities
need new smoke alarms or do not currently have smoke alarms in their homes. In addition, the
surveys helped identify over 40 families having school-aged children with hearing difficulties.
As part of the State Fire Marshal’s “100 Years, 100%” Campaign, there is an on-going mission to
fulfill the needs of those families. Since October 2010, the State Fire Marshal Division has been
focused on ensuring working smoke alarms are in the home of every child across the state.
In June 2011, more than 4,500 dual sensor smoke alarms and 30 smoke alarms for hard of
hearing children were disseminated by Casey’s General Stores trucks to local fire departments.
Those fire departments then began the task of installing smoke alarms in the homes of the
children identified in the surveys.
