BUILDING CODE BUREAU
BUILDING CODE BUREAU
The primary mission of the Building Code Bureau is to enhance public
safety by ensuring that structures built under the jurisdiction of the State
Building Code are safe to occupy.
The Building Code Bureau is statutorily mandated in Iowa Code 103A
to review and inspect all state owned buildings during construction;
to review and inspect all newly constructed state financed buildings,
K-12 schools and gaming facilities in jurisdictions without local build-
ing code enforcement; to review plans for child care facilities, public
and private colleges and correctional facilities; and to review plans and
conduct inspections on federal/state licensed healthcare facilities, as-
sisted living facilities, and adult day cares.
Other key functions of the Bureau involve the certification and licensure
of fire sprinkler and alarm system contractors and installers; the
regulation of manufactured homes and modular buildings; and to
oversee the Electrical Inspection Section.
The Bureau is comprised of four functional units: plan review, building
inspection, healthcare, and factory built structures. It is made up of the
Building Code Commissioner, three Senior Plan Review Engineers, five
Engineers, three Building Inspectors, and one Clerical Support Staff.
