WORKBOOK
Ex: A(–4), B(6) and C(x) points are given. If |AC| = |CB| then find x.
Ex: A(–1) , B(x) and C(8) points are given on the real number line. If |AB| = 2|BC| and –1 < x < 8
find x.
MIDPOINT OF A LINE SEGMENT:
Let A, B, and C collinear points on the number line. If IACI=IBCI then point C is called the midpoint
of AC .

Ex: The midpoint of the points A(–1) and B(9) is C(x). Find x.
COORDINATE PLANE
The rectangular coordinate system and the coordinate plane are also called the Cartesian
coordinate system and the Cartesian plane after the famous French mathematician and
philosopher René Descartes (1596–1650).
A rectangular coordinate system is formed by two perpendicular number lines that intersect at
the point corresponding to the number 0 on each line. This point of intersection is called the
origin and is denoted by the symbol O.
The horizontal and vertical number lines are called the x-axis and the y-axis, respectively. These
axes divide the plane into four regions, called quadrants, which are numbered as shown in the
figure below.
