CASE STUDY NO. 7
DPR CONSTRUCTION OFFICE BUILDING
   Renewable On-Site Energy Supply
The preliminary sizing of the on-site renewable energy system set a design target for the EUI, which influenced subsequent building design decisions and, according to the energy modeling done of the iterating design solutions, was ultimately achieved. The final design was modeled at an EUI = 25.8 and 118 kW for the full solar photovoltaic system, which has resulted in a better- than-ZNE (i.e., net positive) performance for the building. The installed panels are rated at 345 watts (DC) per panel.
The several design iterations included a thorough study of the layout of the PV arrays on the rounded roof, accommodation of the small solar thermal panel array for DHW, inclusion of all daylight-source skylights and solatubes and, finally, avoidance of all shadows from adjacent buildings. This design exercise is typical for all zero-net-energy buildings located in relatively dense urban and suburban areas.
