CHEMISTRY
OVERVIEW From life-saving medicines to cutting-edge microchips, Chemistry is central to
understanding and shaping the modern world. It is the study of elements and
compounds - how atoms, molecules and ions are arranged, how they behave, and how
their properties can be harnessed.
Chemists lead the way in developing new technologies in medicine, advanced
materials, and sustainable energy. Because of this vital role in emerging industries,
employment prospects for chemistry graduates are excellent - and not all chemists
wear white coats.
Studying Chemistry builds a highly transferable skill set: problem solving, mathematical
reasoning, critical analysis and evaluation. These skills open doors not only to careers in
science, engineering, and medicine, but also in business, law, and finance - where
logical thinking and an enquiring mind are invaluable.
APPROACH The Chemistry Department offers outstanding facilities, with modern, spacious
laboratories and a highly experienced team of teachers and technicians. Recognising
that Chemistry has countless applications in the wider world, we provide students with
opportunities to engage with world-class speakers both on site and further afield -
exploring topics such as pharmaceutical design and the development of advanced
materials.
Students are encouraged to think beyond the classroom. They research and deliver their
own lectures in joint symposia with other local schools, and take part in trips and
competitions that bring Chemistry to life beyond the specification. A highlight of our
department is our newly installed Periodic Table display, featuring real samples of the
elements - an inspiring visual reminder of the foundations of the subject.
COURSE OUTLINE Chemistry at A level is studied across three strands: Physical, Organic and Inorganic
Chemistry.
Physical: atomic structure, bonding, energetics, kinetics, equilibria, redox reactions,
thermodynamics, equilibrium constants (Kc), electrode potentials, and acids and bases.
Organic: alkanes, haloalkanes, alkenes, alcohols, organic analysis, optical isomerism,
aldehydes, ketones, carboxylic acids, aromatic chemistry, amines, polyments, amino
acids, DNA, organic synthesis, and NMR spectroscopy.
Inorganic: periodicity, Groups 2 and 7, Period 3 elements and their oxides, transition
metals, and aqueous ions.
Each strand develops in complexity from the Lower Sixth through to the Upper Sixth,
building a deep and interconnected understanding of the subject. Please note that the
mathematical skills required are rigorous, and a strong background in Mathematics will
support success in this course.
FURTHER INFORMATION Students are assessed within the department on their practical skills. A pass in this
component will be reported on their results certificate. Students need to be aware that
A level Chemistry is a demanding subject and must discuss their options with the Head
of Department prior to registration. A level Chemistry is essential for entry into
medicine, dentistry, veterinary science and chemical engineering.
ENTRY REQUIREMENT Students who have studied GCSE Separate Science should have achieved a minimum of
grade 7 (A) in GCSE Chemistry to enroll onto this course. Students who have studied
GCSE Combined Science: Trilogy should have achieved a minimum of grades 7-7 (A-A).
All students should have achieved a minimum of grade 7 (A) in GCSE Maths.
