While employed at Congressional Country Club for my final 3-month internship, I was selected
to act as the Junior Golf Intern for the summer. This experience gave me exposure on how to
run an extremely large and organized junior golf program, and I have taken what I learned from
that summer to every other golf club that I have been employed at.
The primary goal of a Junior Golf Program is to develop lifelong golfers that will continue to
play long after the program is over. However, every program should have specific objectives
that require planning and attention to the individual participants. The Junior Golf Program
should:
Be fun for all those participating
Help juniors learn the proper etiquette and play the game to the best of their ability
Contribute to the personal development of each junior
This past season was my first experience that I have had with PGA Junior League. We had a total of 20 juniors
sign up to participate for the season. We conducted weekly practices that focused on golf swing instruction,
proper etiquette, and rules of the format and golf in general. Every junior had a fantastic experience, and if
Valhalla Golf Club is not already involved in PGA Junior League then it will definitely be something that I will
look to bring to the Club and junior golf program.
