The Forensic Pathologist aggregates any investigative reports, medical records, autopsy findings
(including toxicology and histology), and other available evidence to determine what did happen, what
did not happen and what may – or may not – have happened as a medical opinion. The Forensic
Pathologist will then certify the death or advise how their findings to certify the death, including
completing the death certificate.
The autopsy findings and death certification must be consistent with and supported by the scene
evidence and circumstances (scenes are the incident, where found, and the body). All other evidence -
decedent medical history and social history. Law enforcement evidence is separate and should be
consistent.
There may be different findings by law enforcement and prosecution.
