A Patriot’s view of the history and direction of our Country
Two Founding Fathers are worth some additional mention, John
Adams and Thomas Jefferson. Adams passionately fought for
Jefferson’s draft, and for the unanimous declaration by the
delegates. They did not see eye to eye on everything, and historians
have said that Jefferson’s draft was the last time they agreed on
anything.
John Adams was our first vice president and second
president, and a federalist in the later Constitutional debate;
and
Thomas Jefferson was our first secretary of state (under
George Washington and John Adams), our second vice
president (to Adams) and third president, and an anti-
federalist in the later Constitutional debate.
At the time, the vice president was the candidate that had the
second most electoral votes; presidents and vice presidents did not
run on a party ticket. Also, there were no term limits and Jefferson
beat Adams as an incumbent running for his third term; Aaron Burr
would be elected Jefferson’s vice president. Adams had sworn that
he would out live the seven years younger Jefferson. Adams and
