Chapter 10

                           Team development

3.1 Tuckman’s model of team development

Team members are simply a collection of
                              FORMING
                                                       individuals, unsure of their roles.

                                                                        Team members challenge the
                                              STORMING manager’s authority resulting
                                                                        in conflict and tension.

                      The norms under which the
                             team will operate are NORMING
                            established and team
                    relationships become settled.

At this stage the team is capable of PERFORMING
                                         operating at full capacity.

If a team remains for a long time at the
performing stage there is a danger that
it starts to lose efficiency. It is often best ADJOURNING
to adjourn the team or make changes to
                                            the team membership.
