Data Analytics
The use of data analytics is becoming increasingly important in gathering information on
readership. Newspaper publishers need such information to convince advertisers to commit their
spend. Big data can confer advantage if used appropriately.

Trade Unions
Journalists are unionised, and the Borland Union of Journalists (BUJ) exists to look after the
welfare of its members. Steps taken by newspaper publishers to reduce headcount could result in
industrial action being recommended by the BUJ in the form of strikes.

Paywalls
A number of newspapers have introduced a paywall model. This means that only subscribers who
have committed to a direct debit payment can access the online news of that newspaper title.
FNG may well look to introduce such a model.
