DEDUCTIONS

            STUDY APPROACH

            Step 1:

            • Read the relevant section in the Act. (You will probably still be able to
grasp the essence of a section without looking at this Act, but we urge you

to become familiar with it. This will be to your benefit in tests, the final
examination and the 2019 ITC, which are all limited open-book
                examinations.)

            Step 2:

            • Review (study) the relevant paragraph(s) in SILKE together with any
discussion of the relevant section included in this discussion. Read the
additional information first before working through the relevant

paragraph(s) in SILKE. While studying this unit, also refer to the relevant
court cases on the general deduction formula. As the allocated time is

limited, you will require additional reading time for the case law. You only
have to study the relevant case law. Therefore, you may ignore the court
cases (which will be highlighted in grey in the textbook) mentioned in SILKE

which are not dealt with in our discussions.

            • Note that marks will be awarded in the exam for stating the correct

                principles of important cases.

                                                                                                                                       4
