                   Example 1





                   A university is an example of a non-profit making organisation. The
                   performance of this not-for-profit organisation must be assessed. Measures
                   include:


                   University overall:                        Individual department or faculty:

                   overall costs compared with budget         cost per student

                   numbers of students                        cost per examination pass


                   amount of research funding received        staff/student ratios

                   proportion of successful students (by      students per class
                   grade)


                   quality of teaching – as measured by       number of teaching hours per member
                   student and inspector assessments          of staff

                   number of publications by staff            availability of learning resources, e.g.
                                                              personal computer (PC) per student
                                                              ratio


                                                              number of library books per student

                                                              average age of library books
