As well as the risk of loss of data there are also legal issues to consider in terms of the way data
must be stored and can be used. Data Protection covers the gathering, use and storage of
personal information. Data is being collected from a greater range of increasingly personal
sources (e.g. Facebook). Knowledge of the legal issues will be required if GRAPPLE is to start
gathering personal data.

The time, cost and effort involved in making use of Big Data can be significant. The potential
benefits are also significant however care must be taken that to ensure that valuable time is not
spent measuring and analysing data which will have no real organisational value. The costs and
benefits of the analysis undertaken should be considered. Just because something can be
analysed does not mean it should be.
