That particular day, however, it would be her inspiring personal style that truly set things in motion. ”Hey Todd. What subject are you planning to do for your editorial layout project?” she asked.
“Well, I’ve been thinking seriously about doing a retrospective about mid-century America. You know, the popular culture of the 1950s. I want to celebrate the cars, the music and the pinup culture. I want to talk about the lasting impact and in uence it’s had on America. You know, stu like that.
I’d really like to shoot my own model, for the cover at least and maybe one or two of the inside spreads.”
I continued to diatribe, the way that I do, discussing nuances and details of the period I felt were important. As I described to her the particular style of dress and hair I wanted to capture, I suddenly had what another of our
instructors calls an “Aha!” moment. She was wearing exactly what I was describing. Looking back on it, I’m sure that I must have looked like that old RCA Victor Mascot, head cocked, listening intently to music only we could hear. Watching the spark become a con agration of creative energy.
The process of watching an idea become a concept is paternal. The tedium and anticipation of the gestational process, and then to watch it take shape
out of the primordial ooze of the creative universe
is nothing short of transcendent.
