Background: ‘Hamaggid׳ was the
rst weekly newspaper in the his-
tory of Hebrew journalism. It was
published between 1856-1903, rst
in the city of Lyck in Eastern Prussia, and later in Berlin, Krakow and Vienna. Its rst editor was Eliezer Lipman Zilberman, followed by David Gordon, a supporter of ‘Chibat Zion,׳ who turned the newspaper into one of the leading platforms for the Jewish enlightenment movement in Eastern Europe and for settlement of the Land of Israel. e newspaper was later edited by Yitzchak Shlomo Fuchs. It was called ‘HaMaggid׳ for most of the years of its circulation, but there were years it was called ׳.Yisrael׳HaMaggid L‘
e newspaper׳s goal was to publish information about world events as well as events within the Jewish community, but also published poems and scienti c and publicist articles. e fore- most 19th century Jewish authors and maskilim wrote in it.
Unique Features: Enormous collection which also contains the general title pages and the leaves of indexes (when printed).

רקע: ‘המגיד׳ היה השבועון הראשון בתולדות העיתונות העברית. הוא יצא לאור בין השנים 1856–1903, תחילה בעיר ליק שבפרוסיה המזרחית, ואחר כך בברלין, בקראקא ובווינה. העורך הראשון היה אליעזר ליפמן זילברמן ואחריו דוד גורדון מתומכי “חיבת ציון״, שהפך את העיתון לאחת הבמות החשובות של תנועת ההשכלה היהודית במזרח אירופה ושל התיישבות
בארץ ישראל. בהמשך נערך השבועון גם על ידי יצחק שלמה פוקס. רוב השנים הוא נקרא בשם ‘המגיד׳, אולם היו שנים שנקרא ‘המגיד לישראל׳.
מטרת השבועון היתה לפרסם ידיעות הן מהמתרחש בעולם והן מהמתרחש בקרב היהודים, אך פורסמו בו גם שירים ומאמרים מדעיים ופובליציסטיים. כתבו בו ממיטב הסופרים והמשכילים היהודים של
המאה ה-19.
