am Main, Regarding Appointment of the Rabbi, 1926-1927
“A re broke out within the Yeshurun congregation here, the re of dispute, and it will G-d forbid, consume to the point of total destruction unless external help is received and if the great ones will not come to extinguish the re of dispute.״ (Letter by Ben Zion Rachelsohn, quoted in Dr. Meilech Shapiro's article,“HaMachloket Al HaRabbanut .)״B'Frankfurt: Mabat Mibifnim
Background: In 1926, the rabbi of ‘Kahal Adat Yeshurun׳ in Frankfurt, Rabbi Shlomo Zalman Breuer, son-in-law of the founder of the congregation, Rabbi Shimshon Raphael Hirsch, passed away. A harsh dispute broke out in the community regarding his successor, as many people, including Rabbi Yaakov Rosenheim, one of the respected members of the community, wanted to appoint a rabbi from outside the community and opposed the appointment of his son, Rabbi Raphael, rabbi of Ascha enburg. Various claims were raised in opposition to Rabbi Raphael׳s appointment, and it seems that the main oppo- sition stemmed from the fear that he would oppose reuniting their community with the “Orthodoxia HaKehilatit.״ Several dates were established for the elections, but they were postponed due to the dispute, until Rabbi Yosef Horowitz was nally cho- sen in 1929 to serve as rabbi of the “Adat Yeshurun״ congregation. One of the reasons for the postponement of the elections was the intervention of the elderly dayan of the community Rabbi Gershon Posen, who, soon before the planned date of the elec- tions, called to ful ll the wishes of the deceased Rabbi Breuer, who expressly wrote that his son should succeed him. Due to this call, Rabbi Dr. Avraham Yitzchak Klein of Nuremburg decided to remove his candidacy so that it would not be said that he encroached on the place of the son of the deceased.
Rabbi Yosef Horowitz - native of Slovakia. Last rabbi of the “Kahal Adat Yeshurun״ congregation in Frankfurt, in 1929-1938. Rabbi Horowitz was arrested following Kristallnacht and tor- tured. After he was miraculously saved, he emigrated to London and was appointed as the head of “Agudat Yisrael״ in Europe. He moved from there to the United States, and then immigrated to Israel, where he passed away in 1970.
Dr. Raphael Breuer [1881-1932], rabbi of Ascha enburg. Author, activist in “
Yisrael.״ Son of the rabbi of the “Kahal Adat Yeshurun״ con- gregation in Frankfurt, Rabbi Shlomo Zalman Breuer, and grandson of Rabbi Shimshon Raphael Hirsch. He wrote a com- mentary on the ve megillot, a commentary on early prophets and a booklet against Zionism.
