THE JAZZ SIPPER
Foreword
Vance life had always been intertwined with jazz. His mother was a closet jazz
vocalist, who was preparing to introduce her talents to the world when she
died; she died from complications during pregnancy. It would have been a girl
if she had survived. The official story was that she began suffering from
thrombophilia, a blood clotting disease in her second trimester.
He often wondered what it would have been like to have a sister; he
imagined that she would have looked like his mother. Vance mother was a
small statured woman about five and a half feet tall and 115 pounds. His
mother was no push over even though she stood small; she would and could
get with the best of them. She wore her hair in a very short bob stylish cut, it
reminded him of sophistication and she always wore nice clothes. She had
clothes in her wardrobe designed by fashion designers, such as Yves Saint
Laurent, Bill Blass, Givenchy, Norell, and Oscar de la Renta. Her purses and
shoes would match whatever she was wearing and her perfume had the smell
of elegance. The jewelry she wore made her clothes look even more
expensive. He remembered her always saying that she was high maintenance
and it cost to be the boss with the hot sauce. Vance remember his mother had
a lot of sayings, but the one he remembered and recalled the most was the
saying, “chuck a luck, chuck a luck, the more they put down the more you pick
up”.
