Footnote:
Space travel would have been impossible without on-board computers making instantaneous decisions that humans could not do. IBM, at the time, was at the top of the heap spawned right there in The Triple Cities. Even in the movie 2001, A Space Oydessy, had HAL the evil computer (one letter removed from IBM) demonstrated their hegemony at the time. Many of the professors at The School of Advanced Technology at SUNY-Binghamton were my teachers. They were also IBM Fellows which was the highest technical distinction IBM could bestow. They are the ones who designed and developed the software for the missions which were necessary for space flight. Lots of stories were told about the early days in the close knit school.
