Love Transcends Infirmity
Swami tells us that our love for God can be so intense that it actually transforms us into God. It is the only force strong enough to capture the mind, allowing us to lose body consciousness, release conflict, and find bliss, peace, and love instead. It can protect us from physical and mental pain such as arises from loss of power, mental health, family, dignity, or country. Can we become unaffected by disfigurement, paralysis, and even death? Following are stories that show the protective and healing power of divine love.
As a speaker at the Denmark National Sai Conference, I observed a remarkable situation that clearly demonstrated the transforming power of Swami’s love. As part of the conference, two young ladies performed a skit. One of the women told how she went to see a holy man in India. She said, “I had an interview with Swami, and he was very nice to me. He gave me good advice.” The other woman asked, “What was the advice?” The first woman continued, “Well, I told him my problems. I said my husband was ill and very disabled, the children were using street drugs, we were losing money in our business, and most troubling was that I was told that I had an incurable disease. Do you know what he told me?” Looking quite inquisitive, she replied, “No, what?” The first woman continued, “Swami looked at me and said, ‘Don’t worry, be happy.’”
How is one to take this simple, seemingly unfeeling advice in the face of such unbearable circumstances? Well, the next part of the play was that the woman hearing the story appeared quite perplexed by Swami’s response, while the recipient of the advice appeared quite joyful by it. In fact, she began to dance and sing this lile diy, “Don’t worry, be happy, our Swami loves us so; don’t worry, be happy, our Swami loves us so.” She began dancing around with such energy that the other woman also became joyful and began dancing with her. In this way, they danced and sang, “Don’t worry, be happy, our Swami loves us so.”
