immersed in the leing go of stress in the muscles and feel an exhilarating inner release. This inner opening can lead to a stillness in which we can experience God’s omnipresent love.
Each one of the senses, when withdrawn from external objects can be a vehicle for enhancing devotion. For instance, with persistent practice, Swami’s meditation on light can lead us to an expansion of consciousness and a transcending of fears.
Meditation Instructions for Beginners
Aer seating oneself in a comfortable and stable posture, steadying the breath, pratyahara (withdrawing of the senses from sense objects) anga nyasa (purification of all the organs of
the body) is done. Light is the greatest purifier for it dispels all darkness. One starts by visualizing light traversing through the body, purifying all the limbs and senses. It is then installed in the lotus of the heart where the mental picture of the Lord’s form is enshrined for the purpose of concentration. This process leads to meditation and ultimately to samadhi, that is, the state of being merged in God, the supreme Self.2 (SSB)
Swami’s suggested technique of light meditation is presented in Appendix D. For those who may have problems with this form of meditation, Swami helps us understand what is needed for
success.
