The following stories describe these relationships in more detail. The first three are about experiencing God as separate from ourselves (duality).
I Am in Sai Baba’s Light
As we go through life, we face failing health, old age, and the weakening of our physical and mental strength. This process is part of the human experience. No maer how much we try to ignore or deny it, one day we must face the truth. Whatever our position, power, wealth, accomplishments, achievements, and acquisitions, they do not provide ultimate protection from physical death. When we open to the reality of our body impermanence we might also have a glimpse of being in the light of God’s omnipresent protection.
In the Light of Sai Baba’s Protection
A life-threatening medical condition and serious surgery forces us to confront our impermanence and the need to give up aachment to the body. In the process of facing life’s challenges and weakening of ego, we can see that we are in the light.
In August 1998, Sharon, our four daughters, and I went to see Swami. It was a marvelous trip during which Swami talked to us sweetly, giving us inspiration to lead good lives. Soon aer arriving, my heart rhythm became noticeably unsteady, and I was uneasy. I had known that I had a faulty heart valve and that I might need surgery one day; the rhythm problem was a sign of it worsening. Uncomfortable and worried, I began to yearn for the opportunity to ask Swami about my heart.
While immersed in this deep yearning, Swami unexpectedly granted me an interview for a personal and quiet moment with him. Making it appear natural and without prior planning, he simply pointed to me and motioned me into the interview room. I knew that he was responding to my anxiety and answering my prayer.
