 A Glimpse of Inner Divinity
Sometimes Swami pushes us to test the depth of our yearning before granting a glimpse of divinity. I had just met him, and he was already pushing me to the point where I seriously thought that I might leave India early. During this first trip to Swami, I wasn’t happy with his message to students about being good. I was culture shocked, jet lagged, hungry for familiar food, and now frustrated by Swami’s teaching; I felt pushed beyond my comfort zone.
Swami’s Summer School in Indian Culture and Spirituality was being held behind a large house at Brindavan, and I went from the back of the house, where Swami had just spoken, to the front, obsessing on my misery all the while. At that low point, while at a good distance from Swami, all of a sudden he appeared in front of me, showing me his divine knowing, and offering two lile pieces of candy. As he drew closer, I looked deeply into his eyes. They were like an ocean of love without boundaries. You could merge into those eyes; you could melt into those eyes; you could become one with Swami’s bliss. His eyes spoke of omniscience and love beyond comprehension. I knew that he was responding to my distress with divine compassion. He was pure bliss, and I was immediately transformed into an innocent child. From then on, I wanted to stay with the master and accept his guidance.
