Life&Style | WINTER 2022
IN JUNE
T Take Hydrangea cuttings and rejuvenate perennials
and bulbs. It’s not too late to plant spring-flowering bulbs.
Normally bulbs would be planted over autumn, but if you
still have some waiting to go in the ground now is the time
T Spray or dig bindi out before it starts setting nasty burrs
T Plant beetroot and silverbeet in frost-free regions
T Sow single rows of your favourite cultivars – such as
cauliflower and broccoli – two weeks apart to ensure a
steady supply through to early summer
T Now is the time to plant rocket and mustard leaf. They
provide a fast-growing cover and a delicious mix of leaves

Gardening
While winter conditions are forcing many
plants to have their usual annual rest, there’s
still plenty of work to keep us warm and busy
in the garden. Let’s get active. Here’s some
winter gardening must-dos.
THROUGHOUT WINTER
T Maintain consistent moisture
to citrus for healthy, sweet, juicy
fruit as it nears maturity
T Rake up fallen leaves to make
compost. Compost piles should
be at least a cubic metre in size
to retain heat, which speeds up
decomposition and kills weed
seeds
T It’s wise to protect young
natives in frosty areas and clear
out debris in fire-prone areas
