- The Mumbai-Pune Expressway, which witnessed a number
of landslides, was closed the first time ever in its history,
for 24 hours,
- An unprecedented 5 million mobile and 2.3 million MTNL
landline users were hit for over four hours; some even for
days.
- For the first time ever, Mumbai’s airports (Chatrapati
Shivaji International Airport, Sahar and Juhu aerodrome)
were shut for more than 30 hours due to heavy flooding of
the runways, submerged Instrument Landing System
equipment and extremely poor visibility. Over 700 flights
were cancelled or delayed.
- Over 1000 people lost their lives and around 2400 animals
died.
Here, flood is the cause of the loss and the proximity to the
worst affected areas influenced the outcome.
Flood is the peril and being out of the house or being in
proximity of the worst affected area is the hazard.
The peril is the prime cause; it is what will give rise to the loss.
Often it is beyond the control of anyone who may be involved as
it was on 26.7.2005.
