feature interview
[netherlands]
24 year old Jordy van Egmond AKA Dyro is riding high on a wave of success of late with tracks coming out on his own WOLV label and a string of highly credible appearances at some of the world's top events under his belt and his own syndicated radio show, things are definitely on the up and up for the Dutch powerhouse.
His Journey to the upper ranks of the global electronic scene has taken place in a short time in DJ terms and it has been one that proves that talent and determination still stand for something in the dance music industry. Dyro is a producer/ DJ that plays by his own rules and since his first releases on Revealed Recordings in 2011 through to his youngest ever, highest new entry in the DJ Mag Top 100 DJs poll back in 2014, Dyro hasn't disappointed his fans and peers alike with a string of successful releases plus DJ Gigs, tours and high profile residencies which have definitely made him a name to watch in an unforgiving industry.
He has worked tirelessly over the last three years on making his WOLV label imprint one that really stands out from the crowd with his own inimitable style of driving basslines and grittier sounds. He Is definitely not afraid to embrace darker and more experimental strains of electronic music and as one to not follow popular conventions or expectations, which is a policy that has paid off for the young beat master. Tipped by the likes of Pete Tong and Laidback Luke, with his music also receiving support from heavy- hitters including Diplo, Knife Party, Martin Garrix, RL Grime and more, we fast forward just a few short years and Dyro continues to explode as an entity in his own right.
His tour schedule has taken him to some of the world's top venues with appearances at the likes of ‘Pasha’ NYC and ‘Ministry Of Sound’ London along with residencies at both ‘The Light’ and ‘Drai’s in Las Vegas and mainstage Festival appearances at ‘Ultra Miami,’ ‘Tomorrowland,’ ‘Dance Valley’ New York’s ‘Electric Zoo,’ plus TomorrowWorld and EDC events across the US. He also played his on his own ‘X Tour’ that included 30 North American shows and has broke the Asian market, playing shows across
Shanghai, Osaka, Tokyo, Hong Kong, Jakarta and the Philippines. He has also stayed true to his European roots and in 2016 he staged his first WOLV label night at the world famous ‘Amsterdam Dance Event’ which was a sellout. He has also taken his pounding sound to some of Europe’s finest events like ‘Creamfields’ UK, Ushuaïa Ibiza, Bootshaus Germany and Papaya Croatia.
Label and production wise he has been very busy carving his own niche sound as well as working hard as A&R for his WOLV label and hand picking the artists that he feels best represent the labels sound. In fact his WOLV endeavours have also allowed him to nurture his own young troupe of talented artists, like Loopers, Goja, Awoltalk, D.O.D, NDS and Conro. Although he has kept a steady presence on the festival and club circuit this year, Dyro says the studio is where its at for him at present and to expect big things in the near future. Also following the WOLV format is his globally syndicated radio show ‘WOLV Radio’ which at present can be heard worldwide on 30 different FM stations and is the perfect testing ground for his, and his artists new productions.
I managed to interrupt his very busy schedule to ask him some pertinent questions and this is what he had to say in reply:
So much has happened to you since your first releases back in 2011, what do you think is your greatest achievement to date?
I’ve been lucky to travel to amazing places and play music, I’ve played to crowds on every continent except Antarctica which feels like one of my biggest achievements. Apart from that I think the best is yet to come, my new music for 2017 is some of the best I’ve ever done.
You are about to release ‘Alive’ in the new year. Can you tell us about it please?
‘Alive’ was the result of myself and Goja getting in the studio together. They’re these two dope guys that have released on my label WOLV and we understood each other’s visions when we made the track. I’ve had a stupid amount of ID requests since Martin [Garrix] played this in his EDC Vegas set, glad it’s finally getting a release. ‘Alive’ signals the next chapter for me.
As a DJ/ Producer/ Radio Presenter and A&R how do you find the time to fit it all in?
When it’s your passion and your job, you make it work.
Is there any area of the industry that you like better than the rest?
"I like touring because I get to see homies on the road at bigger events, see the crowds reactions to certain tracks and I appreciate people coming out and spending their money to see me." But when I get in the studio alone, I can switch off from the outside and get my head in the game. I like different areas for different reasons.
How would you describe your style of music that you play?
Raw, rough, bass-y, has attitude, organic.
In your down time if you get any, what styles of music do you like to listen to?
I listen to electro, bass-heavy tracks, trap and hip-hop.
You have a hectic touring and gig schedule, how do you deal with all of the different time zones and the Jet Lag?
Sleep and beers, haha! I try and sleep on planes when I can but as you probably see on my Twitter, I’m not the most patient flyer...
For your radio show and for A&R you must get sent hundreds of records a week, how do you find the time to go through them all?
I have a great team, my label is headed up by one of my good friends who helps me and knows the sound and elements I’m looking for. We do try and listen to everything we get sent.
You have played at some amazing events around the world, do you have any favourites and if so what makes them stand out from the rest?
ULTRA Miami is always a great party, playing on the mainstage there last year was a huge moment for me. Parookaville in Germany was fun and I enjoy playing smaller sets when I tour Asia for example.
