s well as hosting the Junction 2 Festival every year in London, the team behind the promotion also throw awesome club nights. This followed on from the day event the team did in London at Tobacco Dock of which the line-up looked
phenomenal. However, closer to home, I went to check out the night at Bristol's prestigious Motion Nightclub, boasting a line-up that reads like the who's who of techno.
On previous visits when Motion has been packed to capacity, it has been quite an uncomfortable night, but this time they had a system in place to ensure the rooms were not overcrowded, a much needed improvement on last time.
The sound system in both rooms was remarkable, and sounded very clear, which helped with such driving music. We arrived just as Scuba was mid way through his set in the 'Marble Factory', dropping the awesome FJAAK remix of 1990's rave classic Onslaught by Missing Channel. The place went wild and already it was one of the tunes of the night.
We only caught the last few minutes of Black Amiga's set but reports were the set was ace. Dropping Introversion's wicked Dystopia on Arts Collective was a favourite of mine. Paula Temple was next up in the main room, delivering her relentless style of all things banging in the techno spectrum.
One of my favourite techno DJs Luke Slater continued in the main room with what sounded like some new Planetary Assault System productions, and the set built very well.
Nina Kraviz played my favourite set of the evening, with tracks such as Energy Flash by Joey Beltram, Barcode Population from her own TRIP label and Paul Johnson -
Give Me Ecstasy. There were quite a few tracks she played that I want the name of but I think they are productions by her label artist Bjarki. At one point the room was full so they would not let anybody else in.
Techno couple Adam Beyer and Ida Engberg played a back to back set of productions mostly on the Drumcode label, the highlights have to be releases by Boxia and the new Mark Reeve EP.
Fellow Drumcode cohorts Dense & Pika closed the night (due to their room being open an extra half an hour) and rounded off the evening with cuts such as Literon's epic Freak Function and X-Trax classic DJ Misjah and Tim - Access, which still does the damage some 23 years later!
The production of this event was second to none and this was easily one of the better nights I have had at Motion in recent years. Fair play to Junction 2 for impressing, I am just disappointed I missed Tobacco Dock as well, however, I am eagerly looking forward to the festival in the summer on June 9th. The line up is colossal and you can catch Adam Beyer b2b Carl Cox (the first time this has ever happened), Enrico Sangiuliano, Nina Kraviz, Tale Of Us, Maya Jane Coles, Mind Against, Dixon B2b Ame, Len Faki, Scuba, Dense & Pika, Joy Orbison and more!
