through the gate I spotted a familiar car parked in the driveway. Just then the door opened. Paul and Sherry were kissing, Paul had his back to the driveway, so he didn’t see me, and Sherry was too occupied. I quickly drove on to pay a visit to old Mrs. Cannon. I glanced in my wing mirror to see Paul’s car driving away.
Mrs. Cannon was delighted to see us she hadn’t seen Lilli since coming home from the hospital. She was packing her bags to go into a nursing home for Christmas. Her son had arranged respite for two weeks over Christmas. He was her only child and lived in America and it had been over a year since he paid her a visit. I drove home without calling on Sherry I was just glad they had made up. I had a few last-minute errands to run to make our Christmas dinner a success. I told Rex about Mrs. Cannon and how sad to not have family visit over Christmas.
‘If she wasn’t going to the home we would have invited her to ours’, Rex commented as he served up dinner.
Christmas was a great success with everyone enjoying themselves and Paul and Sherry seemed very much in love. After we exchanged gifts we went for a long walk to give the babies a breath of fresh air, it was a crisp day but dry. In the evening we sat in front of the fire chatting, eating and drinking to our heart’s content. Paul challenged Rex to a game of chess while we three ladies amused the babies.
As Shalma and Lilli had their baths and we settled them down for the night, we all settled in front of the television but by midnight we were all ready to go to our beds. Penny was the first to go, then Sherry kissed Paul goodnight and went to the guest room. We had offered to keep Shalma for the night as she was well into her night’s
