Tell us about the labels you've released tracks on.
free in the studio. I find that it works.
Where prog house is at, & where it's
going.
It always has been here to stay. It doesn’t matter what you call or re-brand it, it’s a genre with many timeless attributes so I believe that we will be listening to “progressive” music for some time to come no matter what it’s called at the digital download stores or record shops.
Up and coming artists recommend?
I tend to sign the guys I believe in to my Pangea imprint. Please check them out.
This month you are releasing new
music, tell us about it.
John Digweed has been a huge influence on me my all my life. When I was learning beat matching and DJing I used to listen to Renaissance 1 and 2 nonstop to learn mixing technique, flow, on the fly remixing and time tricks! There is an education in those albums! So as you can imagine, when I was approached by John asking for “Free Your Mind” for his new Quattro album, I was humbled and excited! This month, John has moved up the release of Quattro due to the pandemic so that everyone can enjoy listening to it from home. I cannot complaint because it seems like everyone at home is trying to find new music to get them by. As I stated above, the whole pandemic has been a life affirming experience, and I truly hope you enjoy the package. I heard the whole package this week for the first time, and it is absolutely a stunning piece of musical art from John. John just keeps redefining himself and just keeps getting better and better. I am honored to be affiliated with him. He is an absolute legend and an icon, and most importantly, a positive influence on mine and many people’s lives.
It was always a dream of mine to get released on a label like Bedrock, and I am obviously extremely grateful for that. Hard work and persistence pay off, as well as a tendency to listen to your heart and always view with suspicion someone who tells you that you cannot do something. Apart from my own label, Pangea, which has become my home label to release music on, I have released music on labels like Spundae, Baroque Records, Stripped, Proton Music, Clinique and many more.
How important is ADE & WMC for you?
Well, our label was born at the Winter Music Conference circa 1999-2000. So those conferences are obviously extremely important to me. It is rare to have dance music professionals all within the same 10-mile radius, and all with an appetite to grow the music. This is one of the best places to get your music known! I remember meeting Brother Brown at the WMC then, and his advice was just instrumental in me getting to where I am today. That was a big moment for us there. I also remember Sasha and Digweed playing Pangea music at the Ultra Music Festival and at different nightclubs many times over. If you have a record label or have new music you want to get out to the public, you should absolutely go to one, if not both of those events. You have nothing to lose, and allot of listeners to gain.
Equipment and writing process?
I use Ableton 10, 2 ADAM Audio studio monitors, a Korg controller and whatever VST plug ins have my ear at the moment. If I feel like using more hardware and equipment, I rent time at a studio in LA that has almost all the gear you could imagine. There is no process, when I feel the need to sit and write I do so. I am not classically trained, so I must be very patient as I tend to put allot of pressure on myself sometimes in the studio. I constantly meditate and exercise outside the studio so that I can be more creative and worry
