Protec opens Soho Beach Club
The pool area at the rear of the venue was covered by an L-Acoustics Syva system to the left and right, and was supported by a pair of X8s hung from the bridge to fill in the front of the pool.
It was the two large VIP decks left and right of the pool that linked
to the adjacent clubs – Soho
Garden and Drai’s – that provided the main challenge. ‘We were asked to effectively cover the area but minimise spill into the other venues,’ recalled Mr Dignan.
‘For this, Protec hung its L-Acoustics Kara Loudspeakers on 9m towers and trimmed them in such a way as to reduce sound at a chosen crossover point between the other venues. This proved to be effective as all three clubs operated simultaneously with minimum disturbance between them.’
Communications were taken care of by a Clear-Com FreeSpeak II system, allowing the 10 crew on comms to wirelessly communicate over the entire venue. Production also requested 42 radios and Protec supplied its range of Motorola DP2400s.
The lighting equipment deployed included 36 Robe Pointes, 20 Spikies, six Claypaky Mythos, the same number of K10 B-Eyes, 12 Show Batten 100s, eight SGM Q7s and two SGM P2s. Control was via two grandMA2 Full Size desks, the same number of grandMA2 8Port
Nodes and a pair of Luminex network switches. Effects equipment included a Wysiwyg rack, two FQ100 smoke machines, a pair of ATMe haze generators and eight American DJ UV Cob canons. In the DJ booth, Protec supplied four Source 4 Minis and six SGM P5s. ‘The design worked rather well and the Robe Pointes had more than enough punch to produce a very visible and powerful beam with good colours,’ stated Daniel Ivanovski, who operated the system.
‘The venue sounded great; all sound seemed to resonate from the stage and propagate throughout the venue seamlessly,’
Mr Dignan reflected. ‘A large amount of time was spent liaising with the venue and working on Soundvision, to develop an effective system for the new super club. I was extremely happy with the results and look forward to working with the venue again in the future.’
This is a view shared by Protec project manager, Robert Handley. ‘It was an incredibly fun show to
do and everybody is already looking forward to the next instalment in Dubai,’ he concluded.

   Protec supplied the opening event
UAE: Protec supplied the audio and lighting equipment as well as an SMD ground support for the opening event at the Soho Beach Club at Dubai’s Meydan. The 50m x 30m club area is surrounded by raised VIP decks and a pool area. To cater to this space, Protec opted for an L-Acoustics solution.
‘This was handled by 16 K2 speakers, flown in L-R hangs of eight on Protec’s ground support in an asymmetric 90° throw to contain the sound within the venue,’ said Dan Dignan, Protec’s senior audio engineer. ‘It covered the entire area and was supported by a pair of Arcs Wide to fill the front of the dance
floor, hung high in the centre of
the ground support. Eight SB28 subwoofers took care of low end, delivering a strong sub to the house style music. A raised bridge overlooking the dance floor was covered by eight 5xt loudspeakers.’
The system was controlled by
a DiGiCo SD11, with a D-rack at the stage end, while an Avalon SP747 tube compressor was inserted over the master to control the sound.
A total of 15 L-Acoustics LA8s and three L-Acoustics LA4X amplified controllers were used to power the speakers, all via L-Acoustics Network Manager to control the EQ and time alignment.
