Banking Summary
The number of banks, like credit unions, remain in a declining trend, with banks consolidating/failing at slightly faster rates than credit unions. The annual rate of decline of banks is as follows:
The banking industry remains “top-heavy”, with the largest institutions having disproportionately large amounts of the industry’s business. The table shows the Top 10 banks by assets had 51.3% of the banking total in March 2018. Not shown is the fact the Top 300 banks had 88.6% of the total banking assets.
Notice that individually, each of the Top 3 banks have total assets in excess of the total credit union industry, with the fourth (Citibank), only slightly smaller than the total credit union industry.
‘09-10 = -4.4% ‘10-11 = -3.9% ‘11-12 = -3.7%
‘12-13 = -3.8% ‘13-14 = -4.5% ‘14-15 = -5.0%
‘15-16 = -4.4% ‘16-17 = -4.1% ‘17-18 = -5.6%
This has also likely contributed to a projected 10-year low in the total number of bank branches, even though the population has increased
2009 = 99,525 peak 2018 = 88,666 (-10.9%)
