Credit Union Summary
Credit unions have a relatively constant rate of contraction in number of institutions, at slower overall rates than banks, as follows:
The credit union industry is not as top-heavy as banks. The table shows the Top 10 credit unions by assets had 16.6% of the industry’s total in March 2018. Not shown is the fact the Top 300 credit unions had 63.7% of the total credit union assets.
Net member growth is disproportionately occuring with the largest credit unions, however. The Top 10 credit unions had 30.1% (+1.423 million) of the industry’s net member growth between March 2017-2018, with the Top 300 having 90.1% (+4.207 million).
