                                        FEEDBACK ON ACADEMIC WRITING

When writing an academic essay, there are various things to focus on. Different

aids are required to write a good essay, one of them is feedback provided by tutors.
According to (Cambridge Dictionary, 2018), the word feedback is, “information or

statements of opinion about something … that can tell you if it is successful or liked.”
While critics question the effectiveness of feedback, it is a beneficial and essential aid for

many people, especially for English students.

Some people say that feedback leads students to feel as they are not good enough
in doing assignments. In fact, (Wingate, 2010) claims that when tutors provide a rugged

feedback, students do not want to correct their errors. However, (Friedman, 2004) affirms
that a lifelike way to learn is by committing mistakes, get aware of them and, at the end,

correcting them. Students might try to overcome the problems they have by improving

their writing skills so that they will not have the same situation in the future.

Critics of feedback claim that students might get demotivated due to negative

feedback. Nevertheless, feedback can be considered as a motivational tool if it is well
used (Wingate, 2010). Students can get motivated to write a more accurate essay than

before due to feedback. Thus, as students get acquaintance of their mistakes, they would

want to improve their writing to show enhancement.

Finally, students who receive feedback, feel professors are spotting them. If pupils

put effort into writing an assignment, teachers should provide the respective feedback of
it (Higgins, Hartley, & Skelton, 2010). By doing that, they could feel their effort was

worthy and taken into account. Students can be acquainted with heir learning system and

proceed to the “deep learning”. This leads to a growth in student’s progress and
encourages them to continue learning in the writing field.
