 Number of Covalent Bonds
Atoms can form one, two, or three covalent bonds:
1. Single covalent bond: Elements share one pair of electrons. 2. Double covalent bond: Element share two pairs of electrons. 3. Triple covalent bond: Elements share three pairs of electrons.
The bond can be shown as a dash or a colon: • SATURATED ORGANIC COMPOUNDS:
A carbon-carbon compound that has a
single bond.
• UNSATURATED ORGANIC COMPOUNDS:
A carbon-carbon compound that has a double or triple bond.
There are many Regents questions on this topic.
